Make the Most of Today

This entry is part 2 of 3 in the series The Generation of Change

It’s okay to not have it figured it out.

It’s okay to wonder what’s next.

It’s okay to feel behind when you look at others.

What’s not okay is letting such feelings ruin your future.

When you’re in school, you often think, “Man, I can’t wait to be done with school and be an adult!” However, as you get older, you might find your mindset shifting. High school can be tough but so can be graduating and not knowing what to do next.

Maybe you have a rough idea of how you want the rest of your life to look like. Maybe you have absolutely no clue.

Whatever the case, I want you to relax. You have the rest of your life to figure out what you’re going to do with it. BUT, I also want you to realize that even if you’re a teenager pondering your career, you need to make the most of the period of life you’re in.

What do I mean by that?

Well, it can be easy to say that while we’re young, we’re still trying to figure everything out, so what we’re doing now doesn’t matter. “Who cares if I slack at my job? It’s only a fast food restaurant…it’s not like I’m doing something important!”

Truth is, what you’re doing right now, DOES matter. Not only does the present reflect what kind of person you are, but it also plays into what kind of person you’ll be in the future. For instance, if you’re lazy now, what’s going to keep you from being just as sluggish in a few years?

“But I’ll change!” You say. “Just give me a year or two and when it really matters, I’ll shape up.”

It matters NOW.

The way you behave, the way you dress, and the way you treat others reflect who you are on the inside. Why does that matter?

Well, think about it like this.

Say your boss at the fast food job you’re working at is looking to promote someone. If she were to look at her options and see one candidate who works hard and is always staying busy cleaning and the other constantly watching videos on his phone, who do you think she’s going to choose?

So what?

Who cares about a silly promotion?

You should! Why would you want to be known as the lazy, immature slob whose always a step or two away from being fired? Wouldn’t you rather be known as the diligent, hardworking Christian, who makes the most of every circumstance?

Your future might be uncertain, and that’s completely fine. In the meantime, though, work hard. Be a version of yourself that you’ll look back and smile at. Follow Colossians 3:23, which reminds us to do our work as if we were doing it for the Lord instead of our boss.

Make the most of today.
